The Tradfri gateway is not a WPS certified or a wi-fi certified product, it's a wired product to your router. The app is only usable when connected to your router's wifi.
If you want to control devices outside of the wifi network, you must enaled Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Tradfri bulbs and remotes are also compatible Philips Hue or Smartthings, you can use the tradfri devices standalone on these 2 systems but without the gateway you won't firmware updates.

I've tried to reboot, triggering a manual OTAU doesn't do anything, the progress just changes to Idle. Is it possible that the bulb firmware is updated but that deCONZ for whatever reason is still listing the older firmware as the bulbs current version?

I verified that the new firmwares were downloaded and a new C This was not the case before, previously they kept the brightness but the color was always reset to K white when cycling the power using an old fashion power switch. I suspected that perhaps the bulbs had been updated in the background and this was one of the fixes in the new 1.
So I assumed that this confirmed that my bulbs were now using version 1. But to my surprise when I checked in deconz-gui and in Phosconthe lights are still listed as using version 1. I've tried to reboot in case the firmware version is only read at startup but 1.
I'm not sure if this is because the update fails or if the bulb rejects the update because it's already updated. Mine reports 1.

Okay, I didn't know they weren't always in sync. Does it only read it once when the device is registered and never again or can I trigger it to update manually? I'll add some code so that the SW Build Id gets reported every 30 minutes. In fact the IKEA gateway configures the attribute like this as well, perhaps to have a health check for the light. I have waited 4 hours each time. I have checked the revision programmed and assumed it all failed because the version did not update in deconz or Phoscon.
And now I read this and find out that by some mysterious not very user friendly user interface I can actually read out the software version and the devices were actually OTAU updated. And why is this bug still open?

Once it's online and downloadable like the current version I'll give it a go for an update test. That would be great since the release notes states following ZigBee interoperability with 3rd party devices improved. Yeah, one would hope that the lights become ZLL compliant with the firmware update, including mesh routing see 33 comment.
